Fashion is often about sky-high heels but with the Melbourne Cup Carnival on the horizon the time has come to consider your other option: flats.

Models and It-girls were seen running (literally) around New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week wearing sneakers, flat boots and the trusty ballet flat. It’s safe to say that fashion has well and truly embraced comfortable dressing!

Believe it or not, we’re so used to wearing high heels to the races that choosing flats has become the more daring option. Not only will you be comfortable from morning to night but you’ll also set yourself apart from the crowd.

If in doubt, look to the woman who heralded a new era of racing fashion.

Jean Shrimpton will always stand out in our minds as the epitome of racing elegance. In a time when women were expected to wear long dresses, gloves and hats, this British beauty arrived at the 1965 Melbourne Cup simply wearing a short shift dress and, low and behold, flats!

If you prefer a more modern example, look no further than another British favourite of ours, Alexa Chung, who time and time again delivers perfect racewear inspiration.
